JUST A COUPLE OF TIPS
How do I become a Graphic Designer?

This is, by far, the most common query we recieve through our feedback forms. There's really only two good tips we can offer on this matter. Graphic Design is a very competitive industry and there are a lot of candidates going for very few jobs (in the UK at least). So here goes....

1 Your going to need a degree or similar qualification

If you are serious about a career in graphic design then your best chance lies in getting a degree or HND in a grahics related field. Nearly all vacancies ask for some experience or working knowledge of 'Quark Xpress', 'Adobe Photoshop' and either 'Adobe Illustrator' or 'Macromedia Freehand' software, so courses teaching these software packages would be of great use to you.

If you go for a multimedia degree you will probably find yourself studying a lot more on the technical side than the graphics. But web site design is a balance between technical and media skills.

If you are wanting to do a degree but do not have the qualifications then you could approach an Art College, but you will need a good portfolio to demonstrate to the tutors that you have the enthusiasm and potential to make up for any missing academic qualifications.

For details of Universities/Colleges offering courses, visit the UCAS web site: www.ucas.co.uk

2 Learn to spell

Perfect spelling and grammar are vital when applying for a job in Graphics. One spelling mistake and you won't get an interview. That's my best piece of advice I give everyone. Spelling mistakes cost money in our business and designers are paranoid about it.

Having said that, you may spot the odd spelling or grammatical mistake in this web site. If so, tell me about it and I'll put it right. In the end though, I'm trying to offer useful advice here, not trying to get a job.

Good luck!
